Rediscovering an architectural gem in the heart of Bruges
The Adornes family left a special legacy that can still be admired in Bruges. The Adornes estate with mansion and almshouses reminds us of their noble lifestyle. The fascinating Jerusalem Chapel, a replica of the Holy Sepulchre Church in Jerusalem, also conferred special prestige on the Adornes family with its atypical architecture and strong symbolic power.
Who were the Adornes? When did they arrive in Bruges and how did they manage to establish themselves as one of the most influential families in Bruges in the 15th century? A dozen authors, led by historians Jan Dumolyn and Noël Geirnaert, illuminate the various facets of this extraordinary dynasty: from a critical genealogical analysis to a study of the collections, including an analysis of the architectural heritage and a presentation of the current management aspects of this patrimony, which is still in the private hands of descendants of the founders.
The beautifully illustrated book contains more than 100 images, as well as a family tree and a reproduction of the will written by Anselm Adornes in 1470, shortly before his departure for the Holy Land.
